Dental Emergencies

So every month you write a check to your dental insurance provider asking yourself, 'why do I keep forking over hard earned cash for nothing every month?' The next day whilst playing a game of pick up basketball with some friends, you take an unfortunate elbow to the mouth, breaking two teeth causing you searing pain. You've got yourself a bona fide dental emergency. No problem if you've got dental insurance; big expensive problem for someone who doesn't have dental insurance.

Dental emergencies can include (but are not limited to):

  • Broken tooth/teeth
  • Cracked tooth/teeth
  • Broken jaw
  • Severe toothache
  • Knocked out tooth/teeth
If you find yourself faced with some sort of dental emergency, it is important that you act immediately. If you are too slow to react, it could end up costing you a tooth. (Exact response time depends primarily on the severity of the dental emergency) In case of a medical emergency, most people carry some sort of small first aid kit in their homes. It is recommended that you put together a similar kit to be used in case of some sort of dental emergency. This kit could include items such as gauze for stopping any sort of oral bleeding, ibuprofen to help quell any pain, a chemical ice pack to help with any swelling, and a list of home/office contact numbers for your family dentist / local dental facilities.
